Next we walked down the river to the Tower of London. Barbara had purchased a river tour and Tower of London package deal through the river tour company. We started at the Tower of London ticket office, but decided that we really needed to be at the river tour company. When we went there to get the tickets, the clerk said, "You have bar codes and I can't scan them, I don't have a scanner. You need to go to the Tower of London entrance." The entrance person said no, they don't have a scanner either and we had to go to the Tower of London's ticket office. That lady said we needed to go to the river tour company. Our own Catch 22! We visited 5 different places! So back we went to the place we started. Thank goodness someone who knew what was going on was there and told the clerk how to handle the sale. What a run-around! It would have been nice if the person who knew what was going on had been there in the first place. This is the view of the Tower of London complex from the river.
Rather than buy a guide book, we rented an audio tour which was very interesting. When we went to see the Crown Jewels, the line was very long. We asked a person who had made it as far as the door how long it had taken. When she said they had been in line for 30 minutes we decided to do something else rather than stand in the chilly wind. Instead we toured through another building and when we came out, the line was really short. As a result, we did get to see the crown jewels, although the guards were anxious to get us out of there as we were about the last people through before they closed. I asked the Beefeater if I could take his picture and he said, “Yes, but hurry up, dinner is on the table!” We laughed about his comment, I took his picture and then told him that he could leave and have dinner now.
